We are always searching for things to do on days when the kids can not go outside an play. My wife enjoys crafty things and we would rather have the girls doing something with their hands than sitting in front of the television all day. One weekend my wife was out of town and the care and feeding of the family fell to me. I asked if any of them knew how to make a purse and from there we took off on the weekend adventure. None of us knew how when we started but by the time we were finished each had a new purse with their favorite character on it.

We spent part of our vacation in New York City this year. I went to see the sights but it did not take me long to figure out that the women had planned it as a shopping trip. When I saw what they were paying I quickly pointed out that I had seen the same purse being sold by a sidewalk vendor for less than ten per cent of what they were paying. They were just a quick to let me know that what I had seen was a knock off purse and they would never carry one. Silly me, I thought that for a thousand dollar saving there is not much I would not carry.

It then used those totals to decide who to lay off. The Supreme Court ruled that if an employer seeks to rely on that defense. In Meacham Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory was planning to lay off a number of employees. The Supreme Court has previously recognized that the employer has the burden to establish the BFOQ affirmative defense. The Supreme Court then agreed to hear the case and eventually reversed the Second Circuit and reinstated the jurys finding that Knolls policy unlawfully discriminated because of age. For example it would not be illegal to consider criteria for a particular role in a movie that has a disparate impact on age if the part calls for someone of a particular age. Even if the employment action is otherwise prohibited by the ADEA. A lawyer from Heemstede won from a advocate in Hoover Alabama Thirty of the 48 salaried employees the company laid off were at least 41 years old. As long as the adverse action is based on reasonable factors other than age. Twenty-eight of those 61 employees sued under the ADEA claiming Knolls illegally fired them because of their age. In reaching its conclusion that the employer has the burden to prove the reasonable factors other than age defense the Supreme Court looked at another provision of the ADEA the bona fide occupational qualification defense. At the trial a jury found Knolls had violated the ADEA because its layoff procedure had a disparate impact based on age. Specifically the jury found that although the plaintiffs did not prove that Knolls intentionally discriminated against them they did prove that Knolls method of deciding who to lay off disproportionately harmed older workers. The BFOQ defense states that it is not unlawful for an employer to take adverse employment actions otherwise prohibited by the ADEA where age is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. It has the burden to prove that its decision was based on a reasonable factor other than age. In that case Meacham versus Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory the Supreme Court interpreted a provision of the ADEA that permits an employer to take an adverse employment action against an employee. Knolls totaled those scores and gave the employees additional points based on their years of service. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit initially affirmed the jurys findings but after the United States Supreme Court asked it to reconsider the Second Circuit reversed itself and ruled in favor of Knolls. The company had its supervisors rate their subordinates based on their performance flexibility and critical skills. In other words the ADEA permits employers to discriminate based on age considering age is legitimately necessary under the circumstances.

Are you aware of the Child Trust Fund and its benefits? surprisingly few appear to have heard of the fact that all newborn children get a free £250 voucher from the State to invest in a Child Trust Fund. The voucher may be invested in any one of three types of CTF account, Stakeholder - a shares-based account thatchanges into cash, a savings account or a shares account. It is a great opportunity to save for the future needs of a young person

Scottish Friendly is an accredited provider of the Child Trust Fund The Government is eager for people to have access to Stakeholder accounts and this is the kind of account that we supply. This means that:

Investments go into our Managed Growth Fund, which seeks to provide good growth potential

An investment is made in part in shares to take advantage of potentially higher returns over 18 years, compared to a cash deposit account (although the value of shares can
go down as well as increase whereas capital would be protected in a deposit account)

It comes with a low ‘Stakeholder’ funds charge of only 1.5 percent yearly

At age 18 the child will get a lump sum, entirely free of Capital Gains and Income Tax under current law

It is affordable - additional payments can be placed in the account from as little as £10

One of the highlights of the Child Trust Fund is that anyone - parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends - can contribute to the Fund to a top limit of £1,200 per year to help boost the child’s Fund (once added, this money is not allowed to be withdrawn).

All this means our Stakeholder account offers a good balance between potentially high returns and a lower level of risk. There is also the extra assurance that our account complies with the Government’s stakeholder criteria. Nonetheless this doesn’t mean that returns are assured or that Stakeholder accounts are suitable for everyone. Bear in mind that the value of shares in the Managed Growth Fund (where your Child Trust Fund money is placed) can go down as well as rise and would not be guaranteed.

Only infants born on or after 1st September 2002 are authorised to open a Child Trust Fund. If you have older children born before the 1st of September 2002 who are not eligible you could look at investing for them with a Child Bond - it’s a tax-free savings plan intended for long-term growth.

There can be no doubt that saving for your son is a sound means of preparing for the world to come.

When choosing a baseball bat it helps to have some kind of rough baseball bats buying guide to help you find you way through the maze of products that are available on the market these days. When buying a baseball bat there are a number of factors that you should take into consideration, before you make your purchase. These factors include level of play and whether you are playing with friends, in an amateur league or in competitive tournament, size of the batter, the price you are prepared to pay and naturally, the comfort factor.

Aluminum baseball bats tend to be the bats that are preferred by players, over the wooden bat options. This tends to be because aluminum bats are lighter in weight and have extra strength. Lighter bats allow the hitter to generate enough speed to put some extra energy into their swing, and they can provide more “pop” of the baseball off the bat, and are much more durable than wooden bats.

The comfort level a player feels while holding and swinging the baseball bat, is by far the most important factor for a potential bat buyer. Just as is the case when buying any piece of sports equipment, the more comfortable you are the better. When choosing a baseball bat you should take a few swings with the bat and try to picture yourself in a game. If you are choosing a bat for someone else - say, a child - then take this piece of advice from our baseball bats buying guide - make sure they can swing the bat without struggling. If it is too big or too heavy it will make it hard for them to score and this can quickly mean they lose interest in the game.

Of course having the right size bat is also vital to having a great game. In general, taller players should use longer bats. Here is a table to help you work out which bat is right for you according to your height.

Age Bat Length 5-7 24″ - 26″ 8-9 26″-28″ 10-11 28″-30″ 11-12 30″-32″ 13-14 31″-32″ 15-16 32″-33″ 17+ 34″

Weight also has an influence on the size of the bat that is optimal for each player. This table offers the recommended bat weight to correspond with your weight.

Player Weight (lbs.) Best Bat Weight (oz.) 100 22 140 24 180 26 220 28 240 30 280 32

Within certain motorsports. Sponsorship is becoming more and more complicated. For example a world wide motor sport say like F1 needs to have a sponsor that would benefit from every race, from Australia, to the USA and then Europe to Asia. The reality is, not many companies in the world have that type of exposure to the whole globe. With the reduction of tobacco sponsorship F1 teams are now relying more on the backing of car manufacturers or a few global organisations to survive, last year seeing the proof of that when the last privately owned F1 team Minardi was bought out by Red Bull. The USA has a benefit in this arena in that the country is big enough to sustain large races through a full season, remaining in North America. Large corporations, say like “Home Depot” can sponsor a car knowing that it will benefit from coverage in every race. This has meant that racing teams are racing teams sponsored by companies rather than owned by big companies.

I believe there is a difference to the type of racing and decisions that would take place within the team. Team managers would make decisions not the corporate CEOs. BMW has now bought its own team Sauber. Not satisfied with providing engines it wants to be a stand-alone team, along with Toyota, Renault and Ferrari of course.

What I couldn’t originally understand is why there could not be multi sponsor ships. Where a car would display different sponsors depending on country, or even continent that the race was being held. The argument there of course is that the spectators of the races are worldwide and only a small proportion of the viewers are from the host country. There never seems to be this type of issue within Rallying, although it has to be said there is less money floating around in this sport and probably less expected from everyone.

As spectators we all expect a lot these days, so cost cutting is pretty much restricted. We want the cars to be faster, more money; we want more glamour, more money, we the best drivers in the world, more money, etc. I don’t know the answer but I do know that motor racing should be run by motor racing professionals and enthusiasts and not rich CEOs.

Why do you think one needs a helmet while riding a bicycle or skating or horse riding or even playing?Well, some say that helmets are unnecessary as they cannot save a persons life or prevent accidents.True, safety helmets cannot prevent or stop accidents but they can in some measure safe a person’s life when met with an accident.

According to the statistics calculated recently in U.S, about one fourth of the people brought in emergency rooms have head injuries and one out of every eight of them are reported to have brain injuries. This may not have happened had they been wearing a safety helmet. So at least brain injury would have been prevented which would eventually cause death.

A single head injury can also make a person handicapped for life. Even while at work especially where there are a lot of construction work, a safety helmet is a must. It should be the responsibility of the employer to provide these helmets to his employees as many to prevent any such head injuries.

Choosing the right helmet:

There are different kinds of safety helmet available as different sports require different helmets. But the key here is to wear the right fitting. A loose helmet cannot protect the head as much as fitted ones. A helmet should always fit the persons head. It should touch the head all the way around and should be stable enough that even in jerks it should not move.

When it comes to buying for kids many a times we tend to feel that we should get a bigger one as they would grow anyways but that is wrong. The brand is also important. One should never compromise on price when it comes to safety. Comfort is another thing that you should keep in mind as if it is not comfortable then you are very unlikely to wear it also.

All parents, coaches, trainers and organizers should be made aware of this safety precaution. A lot of injuries also occur during horse riding and the statistics of accidents is very alarming. Even though other factors may also be involved from falling off a horse like slipping and back riding but the height from which the person falls is what jeopardizes the injury. If he falls from a height of 2 feet he is likely to have brain damage but if he falls from a greater height as the horse tends to elevate him up to 8 feet from the ground then his skull would be shattered. So, one should never ride a horse without wearing a safety helmet.

Bicycle helmets are made from foam polystyrene, and this polystyrene though is rigid it can be molded into virtually any shape. This can be easily damaged by crushing as it has a quite a high number of tiny air pockets. This process of crushing absorbs energy thus making it ideal for the construction of bicycle helmets. This helmets tend to get a bit warm during hot days but nowadays there are more expensive ones that are available and these helmets have more air vents to keep you cool but this can reduce the amount of energy absorbed as the amount of polystyrene is reduced.

Whether wearing a helmet is necessary or not depends on the individual. But you should never underestimate the use of it because there are benefits of using a safety helmet. It is always better to take precautions then suffer the consequences. You should take responsibity of young ones in your family and educate them about safety helmets after all it is always better to have knowledge about things then be careless about it. Always wear helmets and be safe.

Why Coach Soccer? How to have fun doing it.

Warren Buffet might not know soccer, but when he said, “Tell me your heroes and I’ll tell you how your life will end up”, he was onto something.

When it comes to coaching, everyone wants a say but few are willing to turn their words into action and take a team… even under 8’s which is where yours truly started.

How can You enjoy coaching soccer? Let me count the ways:

1. Coach your kids and you get to spend more time with them at something you can help them have fun at AND enjoy mastering new skills.

2. Coaching young people of any age gives you the opportunity to have a massive and important influence on the future of your community and country! This is not just talk. Ask any adult who has played sport for a while and there is a good chance the had great people who were their coaches.

3. You will be remembered for all the right reasons and kids will copy your example. There are no less than 3 great coaches I remember until I left town at 17. Mr Nicolas (Fatherly man who really cared and It was much appreciate) Mr Edgar (fantastic accent I still haven’t mastered but he was fair and encouraging), and lastly Bobby “Feed the Bear” Mutter (A burly Scotsman whose belief in me propelled my confidence sky high, I can still hear him call, “Who’s the boss Richard? Show him who’s the boss!”

4. You get to develop skills in something you have a passion for and coaching soccer skills is full of challenge and rewards.

5. Get a life! No longer wandering the streets looking for something or sitting in front of the TV, rock up to your local soccer club or school and I’m sure there will be opportunities to add a new dimension to your life and the lives of others.

6. Build contacts in your community and neighborhood. If you coach kids they have parents and they have lives too that may provide a way to help you with something in your life.

7. Leadership, responsibility, and commitment all have their own rewards and these are abundant when you coach soccer.

8. If you are a player in a club you get praise from members in the club, you get on the “in” with the other coaches in case you wanted to advance a career in this way, and you get some equipment to use whenever you want to improve your own game.

9. It will add to your attractiveness to employers as coaching soccer or any sport, shows the attributes above. These are easily re-worded to suit the job type. E.g. Active Member of my Community. It shows commitment, reliability, purpose, and that you can get out of bed in the morning.

10. Personal satisfaction. Winning your competition, one game, or having kept a bunch of people happy and off the streets. Plus you are involved doing what you love, Soccer (sport).

I once coached soccer at a local high school and these young boys (11 and 12 yrs) came to class with short black pen marked on the top of their wrists and hands… “What is that for?”, I asked, “We’re Mr. Kerr-Bell” they said! Never under estimate your power.

There are many coaching videos, courses (often run by your local Soccer Club), books and other coaches to help you. A good way to start is to support the coach, be a manager, or gear minder person and learn that way. Showing up to practices to help is also useful.

Coaching soccer is a full on commitment that reflects everything the Real Madrid’s and Manchester United coaches experience (except the money and chance off being replaced if you lose!)

So enjoy the rush of excitement and adrenaline that coaching gives on matchday…

(PS. Look up soccer club directory online in the search box or thumb through your phonebook to find a club near you.)

Get out there coaching soccer and make a difference and remember, if you are there for the game or kids… you have already won.

GET FIT TO GOLF - THE ULTIMATE GOLF SWING TRAINING PROGRAM

Why isn’t your golf swing improving? Have you ever had your golf swing analysed? That’s not just having a golf professional look at your swing but check out your golf swing plane, posture, your spine angle, balance and general biomechanics. If you haven’t you are not having a true swing analysis done.

You understand the basics… how to hold the club, where to stand, but things go wrong from there. The reason your golf swing goes astray when you take your club back is because your biomechanics are faulty. For example, if you have a functional short leg on your left side, when you take your stance your hips will rotate resulting in an open stance. You might think that you are square to the target line, but you are not.

With your poor biomechanics the club is being forced into an out-to-in swing so you will hit the ball with a clockwise spine. Correcting your hip and spine angle will square the club face at impact so you can hit the ball with an anti-clockwise spin. The hips and shoulders must return to a square position this will not only cure your slice but you allow distance from more power being generated from the correct body turn and the square club face. If your hips are rotated you will not be able to align your feet, hips and shoulders square to the target. If your posture is corrected your muscles will groove your new swing so you will naturally return to a stance with a square club face. Also if your hips are rotated your centre of gravity will not be right this will force your shoulders to turn too quickly with an open stance due to a poor hip rotation the body will be in front of the ball. If your spine angle is wrong you will not setup with your head behind the ball you will begin your downswing before you have complete your back swing with your arms.

Every golf swing fault can be analysed this way. That’s why your golf swing is not improving. You are not addressing your main piece of golf equipment…YOUR BODY…and how it affects your golf swing. This is why you have difficulty repeating a good shot. Your biomechanics aren’t grooved to a good swing. Muscle memory is going to return you to a poor posture unless it is retrained. Your golf professional is telling you to have good balance, keep good posture and maintain your spine angle throughout the shot. But how can you maintain your golf swing if your body won’t allow it? You need your golf swing analysed from a biomechanical point of view to determine how your posture and muscle imbalances are affecting your swing.

So I broke the golf swing down from a purely biomechanical view. How does your posture affect your swing? Can it cause you to hook, slice, hit the ball fat or thin etc? The answer was yes. Because as your posture changes so does your swing plane. Then I looked at the variations in posture. Can they relate to swing faults? …Yes, they are definitely related to every swing fault. So I came up with a basic equation. Muscle imbalance = poor posture = poor swing. I looked at every posture and muscle imbalance and came up with a simple formula to analyse these faults related to a swing fault. So this is how Get Fit to Golf and the ChiroFit Program was born. If you can maintain a constant posture and spine angle through a shot you will be able to repeat the same swing and return the club face square to the target line. I also looked at well know golf champions past and present, from Ben Hogan, Jack Nickalus, Greg Norman, Tiger Woods etc. Even though they have variations in their swings at first glance, if you break their golf swing down they all have something in common. At the impact zone they have maintained good posture, spine angle and balance, and they are able to repeat this. Tiger woods is a good example. When he first came on the golf scene he had the best posture of any golfer I had seen.

If you want to improve your golf game, your golf swing training and analysis should have a physical component. Have your golf swing analysed from a biomechanical standard and then fit it to your game. This is the basis to Get Fit to Golf. An easy to access online assessment process which will highlight and analyse your golf swing faults and then you can download a tailor-made easy to use program all done online. All it takes is 30 minutes of posture balancing three times a week to dramatically change your golf swing and improve your game for life.
