Although Baseball has never been a stranger to controversy. From the 1919 Chicago Black Sox, to Pete Rose betting on baseball, to Sammy Sosa’s corked bat. And now the on going soap opera of Barry Bonds suspected steroid use, it is in no way hurting in the ratings and fan department.

Why is this?

I think I have the answer, but of course, it is just my opinion.

Remember the baseball of the 70’s and 80’s, the days of the tight uniforms and relief pitchers being driven to the mound in carts that looked like big baseballs.

It was the days when a slugger only needed to hit 28 home runs to lead the league in homers, and the triple crown didn’t seem like an impossibility.

The days before anyone had coined the term set up man for the pitcher that came in in the eighth inning, and the only thing intimidating about a relief pitcher was his mullet.

Lets face it, and no pun intended, baseball needed a shot in the arm.

I mean who wants to go to a game and watch batters hit singles all day. I sure don’t.

Thank God for Maguire, Bonds, Sosa, Ken Griffey jr, Palmero, etc. Regardless of what they were pumping into their bodies, they made baseball exciting again.

And why is all the focus of suspected steroid use on the sluggers only? What about the pitchers? They are bigger and bulkier than ever, and more and more can rush a fast ball up their at 100 plus mph. Why are they not under a microscope?

If guys like Barry Bonds are going to be criticized for using performance enhancing drugs, than perhaps they should ban pitchers from having Tommy John surgery because it is considered performance enhancing surgery.

As you may or may not know, after this surgery, a pitcher always comes back with better velocity on the ball.

Cheating and baseball go hand in hand. From doctoring up the baseball, to corked bats, to steroid use. If a player can find an angle to improve his game and believe that he can get away with it, he most definitely will. Lets just hope they don’t all end up like Ken Caminiti.

Dial up Internet access is an inexpensive but slow form of Internet access in which the client uses a modem connected to the computer and a telephone line to dial the Internet service provider.

By configuring the computer to dial a specific phone number, the computer is granted Internet access. It is usually the only choice available for most rural or remote areas where getting a broadband connection is impossible due to low population and demand. It may also be an alternative to people who have limited budgets.

To use dial-up access, the user must have a telephone modem, a device that connects a computer to the telephone system and is capable of converting data into sounds and sounds back into data. The user’s ISP provides software that controls the modem. Upon joining a dial-up service, the subscriber chooses a username and password.

Due to the limited bandwidth, the ability for the modem to send and receive data, dial-up service can take up to five minutes to download just one megabyte of data. In some cases, caching frequently visited pages, and other software tricks can speed up the experience of dial-up access in some cases. If your work online is multimedia-centric, (music, movies, and graphic-laden websites), dial-up service may be too slow to meet your satisfying levels.

Dial-up connections usually have high latency which can make online gaming or videoconferencing difficult. Gamers with dial-up connections are often disconnected from game servers due to high latency of the connection. The factors to consider while choosing a dial-up Internet Access Provider are coverage, price and customer support.

The advantage of dial-up access is that its much cheaper than cable and broadband Internet. Obviously, speed is a disadvantage of dial-up access.
The speed of dial-up Internet is slow because of text, graphics, connection speed, traffic, and the particular site one is visiting. Another thing is the loading speed, which may vary depending on the type of modem one is using. A higher speed modem may increase surfing speed, however, the quality of the phone line one is connected to can also make a difference in the speed.

Despite the above disadvantages, at places where the facility of broadband is not yet explored, dial-up is the only inexpensive means of using the Internet.

One of the toughest things in the world to do is to hit a round baseball coming at you at 95 miles per hour with a round bat, squarely enough so that you can send it off into the field ahead of you in such a manner that it goes far enough that you can get on base. Some of the greatest sports players from other mediums have said that they’d rather do anything else than try to hit a baseball. Some of these people are some of the strongest and most powerful players in their respective sports, including football tackles who have to deal with 300 pound bodies day in and day out.

So why is it that hitting is so difficult and what exactly is a professional ball player’s approach to hitting? To understand the difficult part, just try it yourself. To understand the approach, keep reading.

A professional baseball player, at least if he is one of the better ones, develops what is called an approach to hitting. Not everyone’s approach is the same, for if it was everyone would hit the same. But what is constant is that every player who develops an approach, sticks to it religiously. That is how he develops consistency.

The first part of the approach is the stance that the player takes when he is up at the plate. There are basically two stances, open and closed. An open stance is when the batter stands up to the plate with the front of his body almost facing the pitcher. In other words his body is exposed, or open to the pitcher. A closed stance is when the batter stands at the plate and his body is at a 90 degree or even smaller angle to the opposing pitcher. The advantage of an open stance is that you can swing the bat quicker after the ball is released since you are almost in a swing position to start with. The disadvantage of an open stance is that on inside pitches you are more likely to pull the ball foul. The advantage of a closed stance is that you can generate more power when hitting the ball because the bat is being swung farther. Also, a closed stance makes you wait on the ball more and keeps you from committing too soon. Depending on the player’s individual strengths and weaknesses, a particular stance will be chosen.

Aside from the approach, there’s how far up the bat a batter will hold it. Some batters who prefer to make contact over hitting home runs will choke up on the bat. This gives them more control. The stronger men in the game will hold the bat almost all the way down at the end of it by the knob. This allows them to generate more power when they swing. Your typical power hitter will hold the bat this way.

In the next installment of our approach to hitting two part series we’ll focus on how a batter adjusts during an at bat depending on the count, the situation and the pitcher he is up against.

Trophies are souvenirs of victories. When they are given as awards they are called award trophies. Awards are often given to commemorate a certain level of excellence achieved by a person.

Award trophies include those given for cultural events, sporting events, corporate achievements, or heroic achievements, like those done by police and firemen. The Oscar is awarded to actors and actresses. Olympic trophies, Grand Slam trophies, World Cup trophies and PGA trophies are awarded for sporting excellence. Big companies award trophies of good service to employees, and heroic achievements are recognized publicly by awarding policemen and firemen for their meritorious service.

Award trophies for sporting excellence are popular. Olympic trophies are most coveted. Olympic games include horse riding, rowing and gymnastics. An Olympic award can enhance the career of any sportsman representing his country. Every four years the Olympic Games are hosted by different countries amidst great fanfare and celebration, to unite the world in the sporting spirit.

In tennis, there is a series of tournaments including Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Open, and the Italian Open. Tennis awards given to champions are revered in sporting history.

In football, the World Cup captures the imagination of the whole world. The team that wins and the individual players that shone through the tournament are etched in public memory. Cricket also has a World Cup, though it is restricted to the British Commonwealth countries in its popularity.

Award trophies are made of different metals, materials and designs. The wealthier tournaments have gold and silver trophies studded with precious stones, like diamonds. The others have cups and plaques made of crystal, metal, pewter, acrylic, wood, or even plastic. Human figures, especially sporting figures like baseball players or golfers, are popular, as well as birds or even bobble head figures.

Awards are achievements, and award trophies are mementoes of achievement to be cherished forever.

Trophies provides detailed information on Award Trophies, Baseball Trophies, Custom Trophies, Football Trophies and more. Trophies is affiliated with Award Plaques.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVs are all the rage and what started out as a military endeavor as drones decades ago is now a technology which can be used for just about anything. The newest thing in UAVs is miniaturization, that is to say building UAVs, which are smaller than radio controlled model aircraft. In fact so small that they could fly along side a hummingbird or dragon fly and make you do a double take. They call these tiny UAVs; Micro-Air Vehicles or MAVs. If you look at a Lady Bug sometime you will find that it is a really unique design. It is a little round bug most of the time then extends its wings to fly. What if we designed a Lady Bug Micro-Air vehicle and copied nature’s design? There are many advantages to launching a Lady Bug shaped MAV.

By using the design of the Lady Bug which nature developed over some 200-million years or so, we can allow the MAV to be protected by its own wings. I propose we launch Lady Bug shaped MAV like the old wide mouth WWII vintage flare guns. Send them up and as the friction of the air heats up the wings they start to open and by the time the Lady Bug bullet shape reaches the top of the arch of its trajectory, the wings pop open and it flies away already at altitude. Then it can fly around, give you a bird’s eye view pick a target and then ask the shooter to press Y or N on their little handheld PDA device like a 1.5 way old Alphanumeric Pager. Y for yes, kill that target or N for no, keep searching for a new target. Once it is given the green light to attack target it will simply fly over to the target and then explode. This could be a very good innovation for our troops to protect them from the enemy. Think on this.

We’ve all been gathering at the water cooler for one final time today, and the discussion has been free flowing-much like the water flowing from the cooler’s taps- and interesting to say the least. Today we have been debating the ever increasing demands that women are making on themselves. Thomasina has just come back from maternity leave, after less than a month, she’s back in the ofiice chair, fearful that if she were to stay away too long, that seat would be occupied by another behind. So she’s holding onto her job, just, but what about the baby at home. Is it possible to be the perfect mother and the perfect employee in one stroke? Of course not. In that case, does one have to prioritise. Do we have to start making decisions about what’s most important to us? Why can’t it all be important? The problem is, is that it is all important but we are being unrealistic about what we mere mortals can reasonably achieve. We put too many pressures on ourselves, raise our expectations to high, and are inevitably disappointed with the results. We see coping as failure. We see being average as being the worst thing in the world. We need to realise that happines is not a goal to be reached, like losing weight, or getting that promotion. It is a residue of how we go about our lives. It’s there when we let go.Oh, the wisdom of the water cooler.

I am not a die-hard sports enthusiast, but confess I enjoyed watching the winter Olympics held in Turino Italy. It was nice to watch something positive and motivational for a change and to delight in some truly amazing and generous acts. I find the wide variety of sports showcased fascinating, proving there is a lot one can do in cold climates of winter!

Consider the spectrum of sports. There are the many varieties of skiing. The downhill event has skiers reaching speeds of 140 kilometers per hour (87 mph), you get speeding tickets for going that fast in a car! Imagine what it takes to be a ski jumper as you attempt to imitate flight and defy gravity the longest once you are airborne. Picture the freestyle skiers who twist and turn in the air so fast I don’t know how the commentators can describe their incredible aerial feats. The cross-country skiers have tremendous endurance, and some stop to shoot rifles while trying to manage their beating hearts and gasping lungs.

We were witness to a newer Olympic event that debuted in Nagano in 1998, snowboarding. I think the snowboarders had the most fun creating their lexicon when they speak of a McTwist, Fakie, Duckfoot, an Ollie or a Nollie! Didn’t it just used to be Narly … or was that suffer speak and I’ve just dated myself?

There are those flashy speed skaters in their skin-tight outfits who fly around an oval ice surface at up to 60 km per hour (37 mph) battling G forces in the turns. The figure skaters entertained us with their dance routines and inspiring jumps. They also showed tremendous grit when Zhang Dan a Chinese pairs figure skater had a spectacular fall which made anyone watching cringe. To our disbelief, this 20 year old got up, completed the routine, and won the silver medal. Awesome.

We can’t forget the curlers. A sport many find strange, but appreciate the accuracy involved in curling your rock down a 44 meter (49 yard) ice surface and trying to hit a bulls eye with two sweepers helping control speed and direction of a heavy stone, while you opponent is attempting to block you or knock you on every throw. Lots of yelling and physics accompany this sport! Imagine four Newfoundlanders winning the gold - talk about a party when they get home!

There is the luge where, depending on the event, one or two people lie on their backs on a sled going down a tight twisty run … feet first. You might think that is scary enough until you see those in the skeleton event, maybe appropriately named. These athletes go down a steep ice track, on a sled, that has no brakes, headfirst. Hmmm … where do they find people to do this?

Then there is ice hockey. Grown men and women strap on boots with blades on the bottom, use curved sticks to shoot a hard rubber disk in the opponents net. This happens as they skate at up to 50 km per hour (30 mph) and shoot the puck at over 150 km per hour (95 mph) while maneuvering around on ice. A shame both the NHL laden U.S.A. and Canadian teams didn’t even make it to the semi-finals. Perhaps too much talent, not enough “team”.

Over the 17-day period, 2,500 athletes from 85 nations competed for 84 medals in seven sports. We shared the pride of those on the podium as they smiled or cried as their national anthem played before the world. Two single acts at this twentieth Olympic Games stand out in my mind and will for many years.

I applaud gold medalist Joey Cheek, the USA speed skater for donating his $25,000 bonus to Right to Play, an organization of former Olympic, Paralympic and professional athletes worldwide who support using sport for development, health and peace. Good for you Joey, you are an inspiration to many.

Perhaps the defining moment of the Games was when Sara Renner, a Canadian broke her ski pole in a cross-country team sprint event. A Norwegian coach gave her a pole to finish the race. She and teammate Beckie Scott went on to win the silver medal. To me this unselfish act defines sportsmanship and is hard evidence the true Olympic spirit lives on. See you in Vancouver in 2010.
