One of the problems of the modern Western way of life is what many describe as the “pace” of life. Personally, I think that “pace” is a misnomer in most cases. For millions of ordinary people, though, it is not so much pace as a repetitive daily grind.

The daily grind of getting up early, travelling to work, spending all day doing a job they mostly do not really like, travelling home, getting the evening meal and collapsing in front of the television; that is more the reality for millions of ordinary people. It is as if they get up in the morning, get sucked into a vortex over which they have no control, and then get dropped out of the vortex onto the tv couch, weary and unfulfilled.

Such a description is, of course, a simplification, but it does have a strong tinge of reality. It is not aptly described as a fast pace of life. It is more a repetitive form of life over which the person has little control for much, or even all, the day. Due to the lack of control of the individual, there is a tendency for self awareness to diminish over time, as their working life, flowing into their home life, runs on autopilot. The repetitive elements of each working day can, and do, induce a form of laziness. If that laziness brings in enough money to pay the bills, then there is an incentive for most people just to carry on.

For those who have an existence as described, setting personal goals and objectives may be the last thing on their mind. 5. Debate With and Question Yourself

some strategies for allowing happiness into our lives. Myths
about happiness: *Happiness is somewhere `out there’ and we have
to find it *It’s associated with goals, places, people, events
*I can GET happiness and MAKE others happy too *Happiness is
basically unattainable and certainly fleeting *It has to be
earned. *It’s elusive and in the future somewhere *You need a
reason to be happy. Sounds familiar? Happiness lives within us,
never outside of us. Therefore, it cannot come from external
sources. The joy we get from things outside is the cream on the
cake, an extra bonus but it can never be the whole story.
Relying on people, places and events to make us happy is the
ultimate fantasy. It can only bring transitory pleasure and
disappointment in the end. There is no need to try to get
happiness because it is your natural birthright. It exists deep
within you like a constant well-spring - infinite, always
available, powerful. Imagine knowing that you can be happy at
any time and forever, without having to do anything to earn it
or make it happen. As happiness is linked to the life-source
energy, like sexuality, creativity, spirituality and joy, it
rests in the individual and therefore, cannot be bestowed by one
person on another. This is one of our greatest myths - that we
can make each other happy. At best, it is a romantic illusion

somewhere in the future. It’s what I call `deferred happiness,’
you know the kind of thing - `I’ll rest on the weekend,’ I’ll
travel when I retire,’ `I haven’t got time to play sport, I’m
too busy’ - and so on. Each day is a unique experience and
cannot be retrieved if you waste it. `Wasting’ time having fun
is fabulous, wasting time in regret, guilt and anxiety is
expended energy you could better utilise elsewhere. Have you
noticed that if you just feel happy for its own sake, people
think you’re strange. They say things like, `What do you have to
be happy about?’ or `What’s brought on this cheerful mood?’ The
whole point of being happy on a continuous basis is that there
is no particular reason - you feel the joy inside you and you
naturally smile and shine, like walking near the ocean on a
glorious summer’s day and being grateful just to be alive. You
can have that `bliss’ all the time, in the sun, in the rain, on
good days and difficult, when life is going your way and when it
appears everything’s against you. It’s feeling `okay’ inside all
the time. That is true freedom. And as you shine, those around
you bask in the warmth of your joy. How do we positively work
with the happiness principle? *Look for signs everywhere *Make
positive thinking a choice *Relax and stop worrying *Remember
life is a daily adventure *Connect with your inner child every
day *Play every day, not just on weekends and holidays *Love
yourself enough to allow happiness I think of myself as a `joy
merchant,’ someone who sells the idea of joy. If you adopt this

“To dye or not to dye?” … that is the question. At least that was the question I began asking myself a decade ago as I grew weary of dyeing my grey-streaked hair. Back then, upon presenting my dilemma to my hairdresser I chose to follow his self-serving advice, “You’ll have plenty of time to go grey!”

Giving up the quest for a glamorous, youthful look was especially difficult for me as I had been the fashion queen; owning fashion boutiques, doing image consulting and writing a fashion column for ten years. I had felt pity for my sister-in-law years ago, when she decided not to dye her hair. At that time I vowed to never “let myself go,” and remain as youthful and glamorous as human powers would permit.

Yet, rather suddenly, more years of dying my hair passed and I found myself resenting being held hostage every six weeks to grey roots, chemicals soaking my scalp, dark stains along my hairline, and fumes in my eyes and lungs. More and more I begrudged the societal message clouting us: “Women lose their value, beauty and worth as they age and must do their utmost to hide the fact.”

Proof of this message drives the multi-billion dollar beauty/anti-aging industry which goads us into defying nature and negating the beauty, vitality, sexuality and worth of aging, grey-haired women.

Now it is commonplace to perpetually dye greying hair; surgically nip, tuck and lift aging faces; Botox worrisome wrinkles away; lyposuction fat off thighs; enlarge small breasts; pluck “inappropriate” hairs (then draw eyebrows back on!); wear make-up with toxic ingredients; and keep wearing current clothing that was in style when we were teens.

Unwittingly, we have been drawn into an anti-aging war being battled upon our bodies. Each of us has to draw the line between wanting to look good and becoming a slave to twisted societal demands. Where do we say “Enough is enough?”

Letting our grey grow is the “road less traveled.” The idea that we must be beautiful, youthful and lithesome to be acceptable and of worth is deeply ingrained within each of us. It can be an unnerving, shocking journey dumping our societies’ shallow values, and coming to accept our bodies as they are: grey hair, no hair, overweight, wrinkles and all.

Three years ago, when I decided to stop dying my hair, with the support of my husband and young boy, I faced deep fears. Being mid-forties and grey-haired would I lose my man to a younger, prettier woman? Would they see me “on the way out” in my professional career? And what was I to do on those days the mirror reflected an old, unsexy, grey-haired woman?

It’s interesting - I had to dig to the depths of my roots - in order to grow-out my roots. To grow grey I had to find the courage of my convictions and move against the mass belief. I had to go beyond my fears to find my own beauty and worth inside. Now, having experienced grey hair for three years, I can say it is incredibly freeing and comfortable to be who I am, just as I am.

To rise above societal beliefs and find our own intrinsic worth, beauty, vitality and sexuality let us begin with accepting, and caring for our bodies and our precious selves. Given the toxicity of many beauty products and treatments perhaps the question of - “To dye or not to dye” - should read… “To die or not to die,” that is the question.
