“Engineer-to-Order Manufacturers Find Little Global Competition” is an important feature in World Trade Magazine. The 70,000 plus senior executives and managers reading the publication have purchasing influence over their supply chain. Global competitiveness is central to the publication’s message. According to Chuck Stewart, Executive Vice-President with Cincinnati-based ETO ERP leader, Encompix, in World Trade magazine, “There is a perception that lean is only applicable for repetitive manufacturers and not engineer-to-order [ETO] manufacturers that make unique, complex products. Part of the problem is that many lean success stories focus on inventory reduction. This is of no interest to an ETO company that makes many “one-off” purchases and does not hold finished goods inventory.”

Some of the best opportunities for improvement in the ETO environment are in business processes and office systems, not merely the plant floor. Eliminating non-value-added activities in engineering, estimating, customer quotations, purchasing, shop floor reporting, and accounting functionality offers opportunities for dramatic improvement.

The term engineer-to-order (ETO) denotes a style of manufacturing rather than a specific industry segment. Other synonymous terms are “project-based” or “custom” manufacturers. ETO companies typically have distinct characteristics about the way they conduct business that differentiate them from discrete or repetitive manufacturers.”

Encompix (www.encompix.com) has filled the manufacturing software requirements of Engineer-to-Order companies since 1992. Today, Stewart holds the position of Executive Vice President, responsible for sales and marketing. The company name, Encompix, reflects the commitment to developing business application solutions that encompass the complex areas of project-based and job-based manufacturing. Encompix provides ETO manufacturers with a competitive advantage by improving bottom line results.

Superultramodern Scientism (SSism) is Scientism of Superultramodern Science (SS). Without SSism, SS would be seen as a philosophy instead of science. SSism agrees with the definition of Science as a systematic body of knowledge. More systematic a body of knowledge is the more scientific it is.

SSism is essentially based on its critique of logical positivism as well as falsificationism and the principle of universal doubt. :

1. Critique of logical positivism -

Logical positivism is a doctrine that if some theory ( that is supposed to be speaking about the nature of physical /material reality ) is not verifiable then it is meaningless or absurd. SSism states that the meaning of a theory has nothing to do with its verifiabitlity but rather the nature of concepts it involves. ( This is axiomatic. )

2. Critique of logical falsificationism -

Logical falsificationism is a doctrine that if some theory ( that is supposed to be speaking about the nature of physical / material reality ) is not falsifiable then it is unscientific. Thus it is instead metaphysical, if at all meaningful. SSism states that falsifiability of a theory has nothing to do with its being scientific. (This is axiomatic.)

3. The principle of universal doubt -

It is the principle that ‘anything may be possible’ for what is believed to be 100 % certain at the moment may be because of the limited intellectual capacities of the believer. This suggests that no part / kind of science (including pure mathematics) is to be seen as absolutely certain. Thus the idea of science reduces to the idea of systematic body of knowledge where each group or proposition has its own probability attached to it.

Superultramodern Science (SS) =

1. Superultramodern Scientism ( SSism )

2. The NSTP ( Non - Spatial Thinking Process ) Theory

3. Conmathematics ( Conceptual Mathematics )

4. The FR ( Flawed Reason ) Theory

5. The FMUP ( Flawed Modern / Ultramodern Physics ) Theory

The word philosophy, as it is distinguished from science, is misleading, as it means what philosophy contains is impossible to be a systematic body of knowledge and what science contains is certain or proved.

RSS streamlines communication between publishers and readers. Since RSS has had a popularity surge, webmasters have been experimenting and using RSS feeds to deliver content in new and innovative ways. Typically, RSS feeds contain news headlines and content summaries. The content summaries contain just enough information without overwhelming the reader with superfluous details. If the reader is interested and wants additional information they can click on the item in the feed, accessing the website which contains additional details. RSS readers aggregate multiple feeds, making it easy for individuals to quickly scan information contained within each feed. Feeds are generally themed, allowing users to opt-in to feeds that are of interest.

The big benefit to RSS is that individuals opt-in to content of interest, totally controlling the flow of information that they receive. If the quality of the content in the feed declines, users simply remove the feed from their RSS reader and they will not receive any additional updates from that source. The RSS reader acts as an aggregator, allowing users to view and scan multiple content streams in a timely fashion.

RSS is a great supplemental communication method that does not burden the publisher with maintaining lists or following strict privacy guidelines. RSS feeds are compiled according to the user’s choices, removing any burden that is placed on publishers of email newsletters. Publishers no longer need to be concerned with spam, privacy policies, and age guidelines.

Publishers using RSS as a communication vehicle are able to create keyword-rich, themed content, establishing trust, reputation, and ongoing communication with current and prospective customers.

What Kind of Information Can be Delivered in RSS Feeds?

Blogs Feed

Many blogs are catalogued in an RSS feed, with each blog entry summarized as a feed item. This makes it easy for visitors to scan blog posts for items of interest.

Article Feed

Articles are often placed into feeds to alert readers when new articles and content are available. The feed entry is typically an article summary or introduction. Readers can then ascertain if the article is of interest and read further.

Forum Feed

Many forums now have add-ons that allow participants to receive forum posts via RSS. The RSS feeds often will show the latest discussion topics; if users are interested they simply click to enter the forum to participate in the discussion. As the topic is updated they will see new entries in the RSS feed.

Schedule Feed

Schools, clubs and organizations will often use feeds to communicate meeting times, places and events that might be occurring. The RSS feeds are often used to publicize events, notify the community of schedule changes or meeting agendas.

Discounts / Specials Feed

Retail and online stores have begun using RSS feeds to deliver their latest specials and discounted offers. Some online retailers have taken this a step further, allowing users to create their own feeds based on keywords or phrases.

For example, this service will generate a URL than can be entered into a news reader. The feed is updated each time an item is added to Amazon that meets the specified criteria or keywords - Amazon Search Feed - http://www.oxus.net/amazon/

Ego / News Monitoring

Companies or individuals interested in receiving headline news based on a specific brand or keyword can use RSS feeds to monitor news sources.

For example, users can use the following tool to create a feed that will allow them to receive filtered news from Google News. They will only receive items related to a specific keyword or phrase they setup - http://www.justinpfister.com/gnewsfeed.php

Industry-Specific RSS Feed Uses Include:

Technical professionals in specific industries have also developed RSS feeds as way to market, promote or communicate within their specific industries. In many cases, this has expanded their reach and increased communication with current and prospective customers and clients.

RSS feeds can be used by realtors to communicate the time and location for open houses, announce new property listings or promote decreased mortgage rates. Content feeds can also be used by universities to communicate sports scores or event schedules. Computer service professionals can create feeds to notify clients of potential security breaches, virus risks or outbreaks. Ultimately, RSS is molded to meet the communication needs of many sectors. Consider how RSS can benefit your business and supplement your communication needs.

May I ask a question if you do not mind…?

What does your business mean to you? Please choose an honest answer.
-Making a living.
-Freedom from job
-Realization of your dreams.
-All of the above

I hope you chose the right option.

Everyday million of people get up and think ‘Oh no! I have to go to office again.’ It is something they dread. Whether they realize this or not is a different issue. Have you noticed how excited people are over their weekends as they will be off the work and can enjoy.

That reflects they do not enjoy what they do. But they continue with that. Yes, they have sufficient reasons- mortgage, seniority, children and security to name a few. There is another good reason worth mentioning - lack of willingness and lack of initiative to start their own venture.

A lot of people dream about working for themselves. Dreaming is easy. It costs nothing.

But that is end for many. Moving beyond that involves risk. Their security is too precious.

Nevertheless with advent of internet, home business things have been made simpler and easier.

You do not need to leave your present job and still can start a home business that you can manage in your part time. Initial struggle period is buffered by your job. You can manage your investment capital better and there is job to fall back upon.

Things could not be simpler. Nice paradigm. A surge in home businessmen and businesswomen proves this.

But then people still fail in their ventures. There could not be better time. There could not be a better platform. But people still do not capitalize the opportunity to its full extent. What could be the reason?

No. Please do not say that internet saturation has occurred. The net is not to be blamed. Internet is wonderful medium of communication. It has made millions pursue and achieve their dreams. It is not saturated. Not yet and not for a long time in near future.
On the contrary it expands day by day.

It may appear a bit complex owing to its virtual entity but it is not saturated.

But internet is only a medium. It does not run business for you. It makes it automated and easier once you understand what is what. Still the person who does the business is responsible for outcome.

So what sets a successful businessman apart from an unsuccessful one hypothesizing that both have equal knowledge?

Motivation!

Zeal!

Passion!

I know an entrepreneur who would get up early and work till his eyes would droop with sleep again, socialized minimally and never cared about what he ate.

‘Why don’t you ever take a break and enjoy sometimes?’ Many including me asked.

‘I enjoy my work. Why should I take a break?’ He would always respond.

That man is millionaire now. Still works like crazy.

Though that state is an extreme for most of us but that does leave a lesson. To be a success one needs to work with passion.

When you bring passion to your business (Of course for that you need to like what you do). it reflects everywhere. It reflects in your website. It reflects in your sales letter, you promotions. You come across a genuine person. Your words start delivering the better message. Your results start improving and success prepones its appointment with you.

There could not be better key to success in home business. It is easier to admire a successful person’s working. But when we want the same success, the input has to be of similar nature.

Let me come back to my original question.

What was your response?

Youth motivational speakers employ an arsenal of well rehearsed, practiced techniques that capture the attention of young people and hopefully change lives for the better. They inspire, motivate and teach students, taking them from laughter to tears in rapt attention.

It’s a special breed of human being that can speak effectively to large groups of teenagers and young adults. Speaking at schools, sporting events, teen churches, or wherever else young people congregate, youth motivational speakers employ an arsenal of well rehearsed, practiced techniques that capture the attention of young people and hopefully change lives for the better. They inspire, motivate and teach students, taking them from laughter to tears in rapt attention as they speak about personal experiences, weaving into their stories life lessons and warnings about the common pitfalls of being young in the twenty first century. If effective, young people are glued to their seats, eager to listen and receptive to the wisdom and teachings contained in the lecture.

Anybody who has ever tried talking to young adults knows that it is difficult attention and be taken seriously. Warnings, messages of impending doom and threats all fail to get across to “know-it-all” teenagers. Youth motivational speakers must come up with a way of speaking to them that transcends the usual restraints of adult to teen conversations and gets results. Using a style that employs personal stories that teens can relate to, humorous anecdotes, and life lessons to be taken seriously, youth motivational speakers are in high demand all over the country. As teens continue to display life choices that make growing up strong and healthy a risky endeavor, youth motivational speakers find themselves in demand for more time than they could possibly fill. In fact there is such a shortage of good, effective youth motivational speakers that the industry is crying out for more qualified professionals.

The most important asset a youth motivational speaker has at his command is his ability to get an audience to believe him. If at any time the speaker comes off as disingenuous or scripted he will lose his audience in a flash. Getting their attention and keeping it is a true art form and probably the most difficult challenge facing any motivational speaker. Talking about experiences from his own life, the speaker creates a bond between himself and the audience that keeps them paying attention and will make them want to follow the advice that he will offer at the end of the talk. It’s far easier to sell investment advice to people who have some money, or sales techniques to companies who have products to sell and legions of people to do the job, than it is to convince teenagers to change their behavior. Youth motivational speakers are a special breed of professional whose work deserves to be taken seriously and appreciated by all.

The Macromedia Dreamweaver MX have these powerful new addition to its toolset — introducing, Snippets! Do you often use blocks of code? Well, snippets make it easy to save it or put it over the same conversion on a block already written on your page. It also allows you to save and reuse chunks of code over and over. Snippets save you time and effort in maintaining a large Web site. You can use snippets to store things like:

* Headers and footers
* Logos
* Scripts
* …

In this tutorial, you will get to know how to create snippets and use them to your heart's content! Creating snippets are not that difficult and would take only at least 5 minutes of your time to do…

Of course, you need to have the Macromedia Dreamweaver MX downloaded and ready on your PC and then, let's start creating snippets! Here's how…

Upon opening Dreamweaver MX, click “Snippets” in the Window menu. You can also access it by holding down the shift key and press F9 (Shift-F9). A number of useful snippets are already pre-installed in Dreamweaver. Then, highlight the text or code you wish to turn into a snippet and click on the New Snippet icon below the snippets window. This icon looks like a file with a plus sign. Assign a title to your chosen snippet, plus, provide it with a concise description.

Depending on what you prefer, if the snippet is to wrap around text on the page, choose “Wrap selection” and if you want a single block, choose “Insert Block”. Then, add the code for the snippet, if you did not have any code highlighted. Whether you prefer it, you could also choose how you want the preview in the snippet pane to display — either as code or design. Lastly, click OK and you're all done.

It would be very useful for you to check out the pre-installed snippets. There may be one or two there that can help you in managing your site!

Then, if you're wondering how to use your newly created snippet, here's a guide on how to use it: 1. Open the snippets tab through the same procedure given above, then click in the page where you want the snippet to be placed, in whatever view you prefer it: code or design; 2. Navigate to the snippet you want in the folders and double-click on the snippet to add it to your page.

It's as simple as you've read it…So start creating your snippets now, and put them to good use!

A Secret Organisation: Short story on a possible future.

Roger Ricketson’s smile was enigmatic. When anyone looked his way they could not help being infected by his contagious facial expression. Something was definitely going right in this man’s life, but until now no one could quite put his or her finger on it. But now, as I look through my office window at the man packing up his briefcase at the end of the workday, turning off his computer, I can’t help sneaking out my own mini-smile. I know his secret. Funny thing is, it wasn’t that hard to discover-it just took a few simple searches on my super-magic machine. The name computer doesn’t really give the device enough credibility anymore, it has come a long way in the last hundred years, computing is the least of its positive attributes.

I’m not your average woman in the workforce. Vice-President of a huge multinational corporation, millionaire, you’d think I’d be fulfilled with my life’s successes, but no matter how hard I try, something always seems to be missing. I wanted a bit of what Roger’s got and now I know what makes him tick. He wasn’t always like this, hell he used to be quite a grump. Being CEO of a giant pharmaceutical company can be a bit boring, especially when all your competitors are just mindless drones with only one thing on their mind-making more money. However, over the last couple of years Roger’s persona had gradually changed, and I was sure it wasn’t from his business life.

So, being a bit of a sleuth-cross-hacker I recently tapped into Roger’s personal email account, definitely not an easy task, but then again I’ve always been far from average. It still took me 6 months in my spare time. I could be arrested but I just needed to know this man’s secret, and whenever someone would ask him why he was so happy, he would just smile and wink and then walk away. Well, now I know the answer and I can tell you it sure was a shock! Roger belongs to a secret organization. The members of this group aren’t to be scoffed at either; world leaders, billionaires, famous intellectuals and academics fill the boss’s contact list. There are also a lot of names I’ve never heard of; there are over 10 thousand members! As far as I can tell they only communicate on the Internet, but from their dialogue they all seem tightly connected, and they do get a lot done. This is the mind-blowing part, what they do!

They call themselves the ‘Fixers’. People from every nationality, religion and creed are involved, and I can see why Roger smiles so widely. War, starvation, poverty, sickness, and religious and nationalistic separation have plagued our world for generations. The ‘Fixers’ have decided that enough’s enough. These people from so-called ‘different’ backgrounds are diminishing the human-made boundaries of the past. ‘Country’ means little to these new-world souls whose only ‘country’ is the Internet, and all are allowed to belong. Their goal is to fix the Earth: to create a planet where all people have an equal opportunity, where the quality of life is high, the environment is sustainable, and all are informed of the intrinsic ‘togetherness’ of all humans. Spirituality is to be recognized as a common thread instead of focusing on separate cultures’ different practices.

Roger is the secret scribe for the group, journaling all that the organization does on a ‘blog’ or on-line journal, hoping to save their activities for posterity. Websites are being constructed on separate issues, and experts speak daily on email and video conferencing facilities. The Internet is a ‘home’ for these crusaders to share knowledge, the true wealth in life. I snuck a peak at the ‘Reducing Poverty’ website, the ideas expressed there jolted me out of my ‘comatose’ normality. Famous economists and sociologists were discussing new ways to achieve a balance of wealth for all of humanity. Some concepts expressed were: A salary cap on all occupations; so-called ’second’ and ‘third world’ nations become part of ‘one world’ after ‘first world’ countries share wealth and knowledge to develop less well-off societies; and how to set up basic industry to sustain populations with constant food energy, and economic growth.

Other websites were also equally optimistic and detailed in their practical approaches to solving problems. I especially found the chat room for Environment Sustainability of interest. It looks like most people want to integrate nature back into being a basic part of human existence. I’m not the only one who misses sitting in the forest reading E books on my laptop, while listening to the birds singing. I’ve always dreamt of throwing nuts at the monkeys. Scientists here have heaps of ideas on how to regenerate the Earth and bring back endangered species from the brink of extinction to a state of balance.

Well, the revolution is about to come, the rich are going to share their wealth with the masses, and important figures in government are putting the wheels in motion for a true egalitarian society. Soon they say, the secret will be shared with everyone, and all who wish to partake in bringing change will have the chance to join the cause. I know Dianne Winters will be first in line. I’ve been waiting to smile for a long, long time; I’m ready to put myself ‘out there’. Like Roger, it’s time for me to CONNECT, to become a ‘Fixer’.

Craps is the fastest - and certainly the loudest - game in the casino. With the big, colorful
table, chips flying everywhere and players yelling, it’s exiting to watch and exciting to play.

Craps also has the one of the lowest house edges against you of any casino game, but only if you
make the right bets. In fact, with one type of bet (which you will soon learn) you play even with the house, meaning that the house has a zero edge. This is the only casino game where this is true.

THE TABLE LAYOUT

The craps table is slightly larger than a standard pool table, with a wood railing that goes
around the outside edge. This railing acts as a backboard for the dice to be thrown
against and is sponge-lined on the inside with random patterns so that the dice bounce
randomly. Most table rails also have grooves on top where you can place your chips.

The table surface is a tight fitting green felt with designs to indicate all the various bets
that can be made in craps. It’s very confusing for a beginner, but all you really need to
concern yourself with right now is the “Pass Line” area and the “Don’t Pass” area. These
are the only bets you will make in our basic strategy (and for the most part the only bets
worth making, period).

BASIC GAME PLAY

Don’t let the confusing layout of the craps table intimidate you. The basic game itself is
very simple. A new game with a new player (the person shooting the dice) begins when
the current player “sevens out”, which means he rolls a seven. That ends his turn and a
new player is given the dice.

The new player makes either a pass line bet or a don’t pass bet (explained below) and
then throws the dice, which is called the “comeout roll”.

If that first roll is a 7 or 11, this is called “making a pass” and the “pass line” betters win
and “don’t pass” betters lose. If a 2, 3 or 12 are rolled, this is called “craps” and pass line
betters lose, while don’t pass line betters win. However, don’t pass line betters do not
win if the “craps” number is a 12 in Las Vegas or a 2 in Reno and Tahoe. In this case,
the bet is push - neither the player nor the house wins. All pass line and don’t pass line
bets are paid even money.

Barring one of the three “craps” numbers from winning for don’t pass line bets is what
gives the house it’s low edge of 1.4 percent on all line bets. The don’t pass bettor has a
stand-off with the house when one of these barred numbers is rolled. Otherwise, the
don’t pass bettor would have a small advantage over the house - something that no
casino permits!

If a number other than 7, 11, 2, 3, or 12 is rolled on the comeout (in other words, a
4,5,6,8,9,10), that number is called a “place” number, or simply a number or a “point”.
In this case, the shooter continues to roll until that place number is rolled again, which is
called “making the point”, at which time pass line betters win and don’t pass bettors lose,
or a 7 is rolled, which is called “sevening out”. In this case, pass line bettors lose and
don’t pass bettors win. When a player sevens out, his turn is over and the whole process
begins again with a new player.

Once a shooter rolls a place number (a 4.5.6.8.9.10), many different types of bets can be
made on each subsequent roll of the dice, until he sevens out and his turn is over.
However, they all have odds in favor of the house, many of them heavily in favor of the
house, with the exception of two: odds on a line bet, and “come” bets. Of these two, we
will only consider the odds on a line bet, as the “come” bet is a bit
more confusing.

You should ignore all other bets, as they carry odds that are too high against you. Yes,
this means that all those other players that are throwing chips all over the table with each
roll of the dice and making “field bets” and “hard way” bets are really making sucker
bets. They may know all the many bets and special lingo, but you will be the smarter
gambler by simply making line bets and taking the odds.

Now let’s talk about line bets, taking the odds, and how to do it.

LINE BETS

To make a line bet, simply place your money on the area of the table that says “Pass
Line”, or where it says “Don’t Pass”. These bets pay even money when they win,
although it’s not true even odds because of the 1.4 percent house edge discussed earlier.

When you bet the pass line, it means you are betting that the shooter either makes a 7 or
11 on the comeout roll, or that he will roll one of the place numbers and then roll that
number again (”make the point”) before sevening out (rolling a 7).

When you bet on the don’t pass line, you are betting that the shooter will roll either a 2 or
a 3 on the comeout roll (or a 3 or 12 if in Reno and Tahoe), or will roll one of the place
numbers and then seven out before rolling the place number again.

Odds on a Line Bet (or, simply called “odds bets”)

When a point has been established (a place number is rolled) on the comeout, you are
permitted to take true odds against a 7 appearing before the point number is rolled again.
This means you can bet an additional amount up to the amount of your line bet. This
called an “odds” bet.

Your odds bet can be any amount up to the amount of your line bet, although many
casinos will now allow you to make odds bets of two, three or even more times the
amount of your line bet. This odds bet is paid at a rate equal to the odds of that point
number being made before a 7 is rolled.

You make an odds bet by placing your bet directly behind your pass line bet. You notice
that there is nothing on the table to indicate that you can place an odds bet, while there
are indications loudly printed all over that table for the other “sucker” bets. This is
because the casino does not want to encourage odds bets. You have to know that you can
make one.

Here’s how these odds are computed. Since there are 6 ways that a number 7 can be
rolled and 5 ways that a 6 or 8 can be rolled, the odds of a 6 or 8 being rolled before a 7 is
rolled again are 6 to 5 against you. This means that if the point number is a 6 or 8, your
odds bet will be paid off at the rate of 6 to 5. For every $10 you bet, you will win $12
(bets smaller or larger than $10 are of course paid at the same 6 to 5 ratio). The odds of a
5 or 9 being rolled before a 7 is rolled are 3 to 2, so you get paid $15 for every $10 bet.
The odds of 4 or 10 being rolled first are 2 to 1, so you get paid $20 for every $10 you
bet.

Note that these are true odds - you are paid exactly proportional to your chance of
winning. This is the only true odds bet you will find in a casino, so be sure to make it
whenever you play craps.

AN EASY TO LEARN BASIC CRAPS STRATEGY

Here’s an example of the three types of outcomes that result when a new shooter plays
and how you should bet.

Assume new shooter is getting ready to make the comeout roll and you make a $10 bet
(or whatever amount you want) on the pass line. The shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the
comeout. You win $10, the amount of your bet.

You bet $10 again on the pass line and the shooter makes a comeout roll again. This time
a 3 is rolled (the player “craps out”). You lose your $10 pass line bet.

You bet another $10 and the shooter makes his third comeout roll (remember, each
shooter continues to roll until he sevens out after making a point). This time a 4 is rolled
- one of the place numbers or “points”. You now want to take an odds bet, so you place
$10 directly behind your pass line bet to indicate you are taking the odds. The shooter
continues to roll the dice until a 4 is rolled (the point is made), at which time you win $10
on your pass line bet, and $20 on your odds bet (remember, a 4 is paid at 2 to 1 odds), for
a total win of $30. Take your chips off the table and get ready to bet again.

However, if a 7 is rolled before the point number (in this case, before the 4), you lose
both your $10 pass line bet and your $10 odds bet.

And that’s all there is to it! You simply make you pass line bet, take odds if a point is
rolled on the comeout, and then wait for either the point or a 7 to be rolled. Ignore all the
other confusion and sucker bets. Your have the best bet in the casino and are playing
wisely.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT ODDS BETS

Odds bets can be made any time after a comeout point is rolled. You don’t have to make
them right away . However, you’d be foolish not to make an odds bet as soon as possible
considering it’s the best bet on the table. However, you are permitted to make, withdraw,
or reinstate an odds bet anytime after the comeout and before a 7 is rolled.

When you win an odds bet, be sure to take your chips off the table. Otherwise, they are
considered to be automatically “off” on the next comeout and will not count as another
odds bet unless you specifically tell the dealer that you want them to be “working”. But
in a fast moving and loud game, your request may not be heard, so it’s better to simply
take your winnings off the table and bet again with the next comeout.

Good Luck!

In order for Google Base to succeed, it will need the support of both publishers and users. Quite frankly, most are having difficulty seeing the value in Google Base. Google Base, is a new service in beta, from Google that requests that publishers add their information to the “Google Base”. Google Base is hosted by Google. All types of item submissions are accepted online and off-line information in a variety of formats. Google Base uses tagging similar to that found in many social-bookmarking applications, though Google refers to it as labels. The labels are used by Google to categorize or add attributes to the information, that better describes the content. The more popular specific attributes become, the more often Google will suggest them when others post the same or similar items. Additionally, items that become more popular will show up as suggested item types in the “Choose an Existing Item Type” drop down menu.

Based on the relevance of the submitted items, they may also be included in the main Google search index, and other Google products such as Froogle and Local Google Search.

Because the individual submitting the content can define the content using labels, the system is left open to rampant spam. While there does appear to be a “checks and balances” in place with each listing showing a “report a bad link” button, that allow searches to report and indicate that content has been improperly tagged, contains adult content, or is otherwise inappropriate content. It is unclear whether Google will create a hierarchy of web surfers. DMOZ and many Wiki systems, create a leadership structure of users to minimize spam, but the fact remains that both systems are prone to abuses. It is unclear whether Google will implement a similar system.

Google Base is currently available only in English. Web surfers can experiment with Google Base and browse through existing items at any time. However, to submit items, a Google Account must be created. Google Base will currently accept bulk uploads in CSV, RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom 0.3 formats.

Content providers who already have RSS feeds can easily submit their content to Google Base without requiring a lot of additional work. Unfortunately at this time, each Google Account only allows for 10 feeds to be submitted to Google Base. Many content publishers have merged content topics and multiple RSS feeds into a single RSS feed. This is inefficient and may ultimately hurt the structure of Google Base, as each RSS feed may contain items that are unrelated.

One nice feature of Google Base has is a geo-targeting search feature that produces results for a very specific region. However at this time many submission do not include a product location so the geo-targeting feature, while a nice addition, will need some refinement as well.

Google Base currently produces far less relevant searches than a vertical search engine. Why Google is relying on tagging (labels) rather than the contextual spidering makes little sense. And why Google has taken the step of content hosting is unclear. Search Engines historically devalue duplicate content, the Google hosting may provide a unique twist to the duplicate content debates.

While Google Base is still in beta, it is clear that it needs to be polished. In order to garner the support from publishers and users Google articulating the purpose and intent of Google Base might help in gaining support.
